The Chamara Kala Nikethanaya, a pioneering institution that has preserved and promoted Sri Lanka’s traditional dance heritage for over five decades, recently celebrated another historic milestone with the successful hosting of the prestigious ‘Sheershabharana Ordination’ Ceremony, also known as the ‘Pahin Path’, at the sacred premises of Kolonnawa Raja Maha Viharaya.
Held at an auspicious time, the ceremony marked a defining moment in the artistic journeys of 24 young female dancers trained in the Kandyan dance tradition by teachers at the institute. Regarded as the highest accolade in a dancer’s life, the ‘Sheershabharana Ordination’ now adorns these young performers, allowing them to step into a new chapter of their artistry.
The event also paid tribute to the enduring legacy of the Chamara Kala Nikethanaya’s late founder Ragini Selvanayagam, a distinguished artist who devoted decades to nurturing Sri Lanka’s cultural identity through dance. Her vision of preserving and passing Sri Lanka’s invaluable heritage to future generations continues to inspire the institute’s mission today.
The ceremony was held amidst the blessings of the Maha Sangha and witnessed by proud parents, teachers, and distinguished invitees. More than a celebratory occasion, the event symbolized a profound cultural tradition that upholds and elevates the richness of Sri Lankan dance.

Established in 1975, the Chamara Kala Nikethnaya has trained thousands of students, many of whom have excelled in national dance and music examinations as well as in formal academic curricula. Over a thousand dance teachers trained by the institute serve government and private educational institutions island-wide today, continuing the noble mission initiated by its founder.
The institute has also earned international recognition, with its graduates promoting Sri Lankan dance across countries such as Italy, Australia, Canada, Japan, England, Russia, Germany, and France. Notably, the institute made history in 2009 by organizing a large-scale ‘Sheershabharana Ordination’ ceremony in Rome, marking the first time such a significant traditional event was held overseas.
Having received numerous accolades, including awards at national youth dance competitions and recognition as a leading dance troupe in the Western Province, the Chamara Kala Nikethanaya remains committed to further enriching Sri Lanka’s cultural landscape through continued dedication to the art of dance.
