Hilton Yala Resort marked Earth Week 2026 with a series of thoughtfully curated initiatives, bringing together guests and team members to celebrate sustainability, conservation, and responsible living in one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary natural environments.
Throughout the week, the resort transformed everyday guest experiences into meaningful moments of connection with nature. The celebrations commenced with guided nature walks led by Hilton Yala’s Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) certified and CyberTracker qualified Rangers, offering guests the opportunity to explore the surrounding ecosystem while gaining insight into the region’s biodiversity and conservation efforts.
In a creative shift from tradition, the resort introduced a herbal welcome experience, featuring a curated selection of natural beverages prepared using locally sourced ingredients. This initiative contributed to a reduction in single-use beverage packaging, supporting the resort’s broader goal of minimising plastic consumption across guest touchpoints.
Guests were also invited to participate in a tree planting activity, contributing to the planting of over 100 native trees during the week, supporting habitat restoration, enhancing biodiversity, and contributing to long-term carbon sequestration and improved air quality within the surrounding ecosystem.
Extending its commitment beyond the resort, Hilton Yala organised a beach clean-up initiative, bringing together team members from across all departments in a unified effort to preserve the surrounding coastal environment and promote collective responsibility towards nature.
The week also saw a series of internal engagement activities, including a drawing competition and music sessions, encouraging team members to express their connection to nature and sustainability through creativity and collaboration.
In alignment with global sustainability efforts, the resort observed a daily energy conservation hour, during which all non-essential lighting was switched off—resulting in an estimated 10% reduction in evening energy consumption during the week, while reinforcing awareness around responsible resource use.
“Earth Week is an opportunity for us to go beyond awareness and create meaningful action,” said Gitanjali Chakravarthy, General Manager of Hilton Yala Resort. “At Hilton Yala, sustainability is deeply embedded in how we operate—from the experiences we design for our guests to the way we engage our team and community. Initiatives like these allow us to inspire a deeper connection with nature while contributing to the long-term preservation of this incredible environment.”
Hilton Yala’s sustainability efforts are guided by Hilton’s global Travel with Purpose strategy—its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework designed to drive responsible travel and create positive impact across communities and ecosystems. The programme focuses on reducing carbon emissions, water consumption, and waste, while supporting biodiversity, responsible sourcing, and community engagement.
At property level, these commitments translate into measurable impact. Hilton Yala continues to drive sustainability through initiatives such as water-efficient irrigation systems contributing to reduced freshwater usage, food waste management programmes aimed at reducing kitchen waste by up to 30%, and ongoing efforts to eliminate single-use plastics across operations.
