- Sumithrayo opens a new chapter
Sumithrayo, the Sri Lankan organisation dedicated to mental health support and volunteer services, officially opened a new building at its main premises on 19 March. The building is designed to provide volunteers with a dedicated workspace and access to learning resources, including a library, to enhance their service to the community.
The new facility was conceived to support the organisation’s growing network of volunteers, who provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and counseling to individuals across the country. It features open work areas, private rooms for confidential discussions, and communal spaces to encourage collaboration among volunteers.
The inclusion of a library emphasises Sumithrayo’s commitment to ongoing education and training, offering volunteers resources on mental health, counseling techniques, and personal development.
During the launch ceremony, Sumithrayo officials highlighted the importance of volunteer wellbeing and the role the building will play in supporting their work.
The library within the building is stocked with reference materials, research publications and guides relevant to mental health and counseling. Volunteers can use the space for study, workshops, and small training sessions, integrating knowledge acquisition directly into their volunteer work. The design of the library also emphasises quiet reflection, giving volunteers a space to recharge while learning.
Functionality and accessibility were key considerations in the building’s design. Open-plan work areas encourage teamwork and interaction, while private rooms allow volunteers to conduct confidential consultations. Sustainable building practices were incorporated, including energy-efficient lighting and ventilation systems and the design prioritizes natural light to create a comfortable and inviting environment.
Volunteers present at the launch expressed appreciation for the new facilities. Many noted that having a dedicated space with access to information will improve the quality of their work and provide opportunities for skill development. The building also demonstrates Sumithrayo’s mission to professionalise volunteer work without compromising the organisation’s focus on empathy and community service.
The building is expected to serve as a hub for volunteer coordination, training, and knowledge sharing. By centralising these functions, Sumithrayo aims to expand its reach, ensuring that volunteers have the tools and guidance necessary to respond to mental health crises and provide support effectively. The organization hopes that the facility will also attract new volunteers, offering them a structured and resource-rich environment to contribute meaningfully to community welfare.
The opening of this building marks a significant milestone in Sumithrayo’s development. It combines practical infrastructure with educational resources to create a space that supports volunteers in their work and growth. Through this initiative, the organisation reinforces its commitment to mental health services in Sri Lanka, ensuring that volunteers are equipped, informed and supported in delivering compassionate care to those in need.
