Sri Lanka, ranked 157th in FIFA, suffered a 1-4 defeat to 175th-ranked Bhutan in their second Group ‘B’ match of the SAFF Women’s Football Championship held at Dashrath Rangasala Stadium in Nepal yesterday after trailing 1-2 at halftime and unable to recover.
Bhutan’s Deki Lhazom opened the scoring in the 7th minute, giving her team an early lead. Sri Lanka’s captain Thushani Madushika responded in the 23rd minute, equalizing the score. However, Bhutan regained their lead with Dorji Edon’s strike in the 32nd minute, bringing the score to 2-1 before halftime.
In the second half, Bhutan further extended their lead as Deki Lhazom scored again in the 76th minute, followed by a goal from Namgyel Dema in the 79th minute, sealing Bhutan’s dominant 4-1 victory.
Despite several substitutions and attempts to close the gap, Sri Lanka couldn’t find a way back into the game. With this loss, Sri Lanka faces an uphill battle in their final Group ‘B’ match against host nation Nepal on October 24.
The match is scheduled for 5:15 PM, and Sri Lanka will be eager to bounce back from this defeat. (SJ)
