Sri Lankan para-athlete Palitha Bandara made history by winning the gold medal in the Shot Put F-42 event at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix held in Dubai yesterday. His outstanding performance brought pride to the nation, marking a major milestone for Sri Lanka para-athletics history.
The 32-year-old, who won the Commonwealth silver medal in 2022 in Discus Throw, took part in Shot Put this time and won Gold. This was his first international Gold medal in Shot Put. He placed fifth at the last Paralympic Games in France last year and aims to participate in the next Paralympic. This gold medal will give him a big boost. Palitha, a Staff Sergeant of the Sri Lanka Army, is coached by Prabath Dhanushka Perera.
Meanwhile, Nuwan Indika Gamage won the silver medal in the 100m T-44 event at the Grand Prix in Dubai. Nuwan finished second with a time of 11.45 seconds to bag the silver medal. Nuwan is coached by Y.K. Kularatne. The coach said, “This type of a meet is important for para athletes to gain experience and improve their world rankings.”
Earlier on the first day, Samitha Dulan won the Gold in the Javelin Throw event in the F-44/64 category.
