Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe to keynote Planters’ Association AGM

Governor of the Central Bank Sri Lanka, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, will grace the 172nd Annual General Meeting of the Planters' Association of Ceylon (PAC) as its Chief Guest. The AGM on Saturday, 19th September will bring together Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs), industry leaders and key stakeholders, to review the sector's performance and shape strategies for its continued contribution to the national economy.

Dr. Weerasinghe's address comes at a pivotal juncture for Sri Lanka's plantation industry, as the industry works to expand investment, improve productivity, and strengthen policy, in a changing economic landscape.

While tea remains the backbone of the country's agricultural exports, RPCs are increasingly diversifying into higher-value crops, including oil palm, and others such as coffee, avocado, berries, pepper, cinnamon, cardamom and cocoa, thus opening new opportunities in premium international markets, while easing reliance on traditional commodities.

Meanwhile, the sector is vigorously investing in replanting, processing capacity, environmental certification and renewable energy, including solar power installations, signifying an industry adapting to shifting global market expectations.

Founded in 1854, the PA continues to represent the collective interests of Sri Lanka's plantation industry bringing together 22 RPCs, contributing to the country's tea, rubber, palm oil and spice cultivation.

As the industry's recognized voice, the PA continues to engage constructively with the government and other stakeholders on policies shaping the sector's long-term viability.

The 172nd AGM offers an important platform for the industry to take stock, address emerging challenges and set out a forward-looking agenda.
