Record entrepreneur loans expected in 2026: Sunil Handunneththi

Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunneththi, announced that 2026 will witness the highest number of loans granted to entrepreneurs in recent history, as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the industrial sector.

Addressing the Central Province Entrepreneurship Awards Ceremony as the chief guest, the Minister said the government is placing significant emphasis on empowering local industrialists and expanding access to finance.

He revealed that a substantial allocation of Rs. 87 billion had been made in 2025 to facilitate entrepreneurship credit. In addition, District and Divisional Secretaries have been instructed to establish Land Banks to address persistent challenges faced by entrepreneurs in acquiring land for industrial activities.

The Minister also highlighted several measures introduced to remove practical obstacles encountered by entrepreneurs, noting that improving ease of doing business remains a key priority.

He further said that a digitalised One-Stop Centre will be set up in the near future, enabling entrepreneurs to obtain necessary approvals and licenses efficiently, without bribery or political interference.

In addition, the Minister proposed introducing a special award for the “Best Import Alternative Industry” from next year, aimed at encouraging businesses that contribute to saving foreign exchange.
