In recognition of their unwavering commitment to supporting the broader global sustainability agenda and its pursuit to inspire an active lifestyle throughout the Sri Lankan community, City Cycle Industries Manufacturing (Pvt.) Ltd, known as Lumala, was bestowed with a Bronze Award under the Best Private Institution that Contributes to the Environment category at the recent Presidential Environment Awards 2024.
The awards ceremony is one of the most sought-after events of the year, recognizing and rewarding some of the best sustainability champions in the country. Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Central Environment Authority (CEA), the event was held on 28 June at the BMICH under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Other delegates include Minister of State for Provincial Councils, Local Government, and Environment Janaka Wakkumbura, State Minister of Trade and Environment S. Viyalendiran and Environment Ministry Secretary Prabath Chandrakeerthi and members of the diplomatic community.
Lumala is a renowned exporter of bicycles and e-bikes for over four decades. Its leadership in the realm of smart mobility speaks for itself. Its continued efforts towards bringing about some of the most impactful innovations through its ethical and environmental-friendly sustainable manufacturing practices have earned Lumala a distinctive reputation in the industry. One of the most notable ones is the Eco Hauler e-bike cart, which was designed to address concerns in waste management in the country.
In line with Sri Lanka’s commitment to increase its forest cover by 32 percent by 2030 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 14.5 percent, Lumala has also stepped up to contribute to this effort both as a company and its varied product offerings.
The Eco-Hauler range, in collaboration with the USAID CCBO program, contributes extensively to combat plastic pollution and enhance efficiencies in waste collection in both the urban and coastal areas, alongside riverbanks. This initiative goes on to showcase Sri Lanka’s talent in championing environmental sustainability.
Lumala’s range of e-bikes is designed and built with the most economical and eco-friendly approach, ensuring minimal ecological impact whilst simultaneously enhancing efficiency, performance and durability. Its Voltage edition is paving the way in this, and Uber Eats have partnered with Lumala to use them. This enabled Lumala to also earn a merit certificate at the Best Project Sustainability Awards 2023.
Further, Lumala will also be hosting Eco Ride 2.0, following last year’s success,
where participants from across the country come together to raise awareness and advocate on sustainability and e-mobility, from grassroot environmental organizations, university students, members of clubs, associations, municipal councils, ministries, and diverse riding teams, through to tourists, cycling enthusiasts and social media influencers.
This award is a testament to Lumala’s track record for groundbreaking innovations in smart mobility and environmental stewardship. For detailed information about their eco-initiatives, please explore their website at www.lumala.lk.
