20% of Sri Lankan schoolchildren affected by malnutrition

More than 20% of schoolchildren in Sri Lanka suffer from malnutrition, according to the Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Anil Jasinghe.

Speaking during National Nutrition Month, the Health Ministry official said recent surveys found stunting at 10.1% and underweight prevalence at 16.1% among children.

He warned that children affected by malnutrition face a higher risk of developing obesity later in life.

Dr. Jasinghe also highlighted concerns over obesity among adults, particularly women and men across the country.
