SriLankan Airlines partners with the Bank of Ceylon (BOC) and reaches a new milestone in mobile technology and payments at the airline’s cargo terminal in Katunayake with the introduction of the BOC SmartPay mobile platform facility. The BOC SmartPay is a digital payment solution that is designed to deliver greater convenience and security for customers’ transactions.
The new digital payment solution will remove some of the hassles faced by customers in the air freight industry. It also seeks to meet the increasing demand for convenient, contactless digital transactions, which escalated during the pandemic with the need for stricter hygiene protocols.
Aside from enabling quick cashless and secure payments, BOC SmartPay is able to process cardless, QR code payments. It also allows customers to pay from a choice of over 25 types of digital wallets that are certified by LankaClear. Customers will be able to effortlessly pay all warehouse charges at the cargo terminal including for handling, documentation and storage through BOC SmartPay.
Further, both customers and SriLankan Airlines will benefit from the elimination of the inconvenience and risk of handling large quantities of physical currency at the cargo terminal. The switch to BOC SmartPay facilitates real-time payments, which would support SriLankan Airlines to save on cash-in-transit insurance premiums.

On average, close to 10,000 cash and credit-based payments were being made on a monthly basis at the cargo terminal. SriLankan Airlines expects at least 20 per cent of such transactions to convert to digital payments in the short-term, and more conversions in the long haul with BOC SmartPay. The airline is also working on extending the platform to other payment touchpoints including its ticket offices across the island.
Customers must simply download and install a digital wallet that is certified by LankaClear from the Google Play Store or App Store and link their bank account. They may then settle their warehouse charges at the SriLankan Airlines’ cargo terminal by scanning the QR code provided at the time of clearing consignments.
