Sri Lanka–Thailand Society elects new president

Deshabandu K Jayakumar was unanimously elected President of the Sri Lanka–Thailand Society at its 29th Annual General Meeting held on 25 September at the Grand Oriental Hotel, Colombo.

The election comes as Sri Lanka and Thailand mark 70 years of diplomatic relations this year. The two countries established diplomatic ties on 20 November 1955, with bilateral relations subsequently expanding across government, cultural, religious and economic spheres.

The Sri Lanka–Thailand Society has continued to promote ties between the two countries through its activities and engagements.

Meanwhile, the Society recently hosted the Excellence Grand Thai Night at the Harbour View of the Grand Oriental Hotel, Colombo, with Thai Ambassador Paitoon Mahapannaaporn among the distinguished guests.

The event also recognised Chulamanee Chartsuwan on her recent appointment as Secretary-General of the Colombo Plan. The occasion was attended by members of the diplomatic community, distinguished guests and members of the Society, and highlighted the longstanding relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
