The “Purupuruwo” Taking Over TikTok …and Changing Hearts Along the Way

If you own a feline fur-baby, you already know who the real boss at home is. Your schedule? Irrelevant. Midnight zoomies? Might as well join in. A messy litter box at 6.00 a.m.? Congratulations, peasant, your shift has officially begun.

And yet, we rearrange our entire lives around these tiny creatures with giant attitudes because… well, they are our babies. They change lives in ways you cannot explain unless you have experienced it yourself. Somehow, a tiny purring fluff-ball with a superiority complex can become your comfort, your routine, your emotional support system, and the center of your home all at once. And honestly, if dealing with a dramatic attitude wrapped in a cute face is the price you have to pay, most cat owners will gladly pay it.

Which is exactly why thousands across Sri Lanka have found themselves emotionally invested in the now widely-loved TikTok page, “CocoBunny Family,” lovingly run by husband and wife duo Adithya Upul Indrajith and Ruwani Rathnayaka.

Fondly referring to all cats as “purupuruwo” (an ode to the purr-engines that never shut down), the couple has become a familiar presence on Sri Lankan TikTok feeds through videos filled with hilarious feline behaviour, heartwarming everyday moments, educational content, rescue stories, emotional reflections, and the kind of relatable cat-parent chaos every pet owner instantly understands.

But while many know them for their adorable content and viral videos, what most may not realize is how two rescued stray cats completely transformed their lives, and inspired a mission rooted in compassion, humanity, and love in Sri Lanka.

The Strays Who Started It All

Long before the growing TikTok community, viral videos, and overflowing comments section, there were simply two stray cats searching for safety, warmth, and a home. First came Bunny. Then Coco. And somewhere between feeding schedules, tiny paws running across the house, road trips together, sleepy cuddles, and unforgettable everyday moments, Adithya and Ruwani realized their lives would never be the same again. What started as simply documenting funny and wholesome moments soon evolved into something much deeper - using their platform to show people that stray and rescued cats deserve just as much love, care, patience, and belonging as any other pet.

Through Coco and Bunny’s journey from abandoned strays to deeply loved family members, the couple slowly began encouraging more people to open their homes to rescued animals, while also creating awareness around the realities and responsibilities that come with adopting and caring for them properly. Initially, their content focused on the natural chaos, their food habits, strange sleeping patterns, emotional reactions, playful interactions, dramatic moods, and hilarious day-to-day behaviours.  But as their audience grew, they began noticing something far more important beneath the entertainment. People genuinely wanted help. “We realized that many people did not really know how to take care of cats properly,” they explained. “Food, medicines, behaviour, illnesses, emotional care…there were so many questions.”

And with those questions came a heartbreaking reality they could no longer ignore. Too many cats were still being abandoned. “Many stray cats become abandoned simply because people do not know how to care for them or overcome the difficulties that come with raising pets,” they shared. “That became one of the core reasons behind CocoBunny Family.”

Today, the page has evolved into much more than a social media channel. It has become an educational and emotional support space for cat owners across Sri Lanka, a platform where knowledge is shared freely, stories are exchanged openly, and compassion is constantly encouraged. Because for Adithya and Ruwani, this was never just about creating “cute content.” It was about creating understanding.

How TikTok Helped Turn CocoBunny Family Into a Community

While Coco and Bunny became the heart of the story, TikTok became the platform that gave their message scale, visibility, and extraordinary human connection. And according to the couple, that transformation changed everything.

“TikTok has been one of the biggest support systems in helping us grow and share our story,” they said. “In Sri Lanka, it is one of the fastest-growing platforms, and the audience on TikTok supported us in ways we never expected.”

In many ways, TikTok became far more than just a content platform for CocoBunny Family… it became a bridge connecting strangers through compassion, guidance, shared experiences, and a collective love for animals. Behind every funny “purupuruwo” video, viral moment, hashtag, comment, and heartfelt interaction lies a much deeper purpose rooted in empathy, patience, responsibility, and humanity itself. As Adithya shared, they strongly believe that “a human capable of loving pets is a human capable of loving anyone else too, whether that is another human being, the environment around them, or even themselves,” a philosophy that continues to shape not just their content, but the growing community they have built through TikTok.

And naturally, the hashtags followed.

From #CocoBunnyFamily and #PuruPuruwo to wider pet-loving communities under #CatTok, #PetTok, #CatLovers, #RescueCats and #FurbabyLife, their content steadily reached audiences far beyond their own follower base. Videos began circulating rapidly through shares, reposts, stitched reactions, recommendations, and comment threads filled with emotional stories from fellow pet parents.

In an online world where content disappears in seconds, CocoBunny Family managed to build something deeply personal and highly engaging through TikTok’s community-driven ecosystem. Through relatable storytelling, trending sounds, educational snippets, emotional captions, playful cat moments, and highly shareable videos, the couple found themselves connecting with thousands of Sri Lankan pet lovers who saw pieces of their own lives reflected in Coco and Bunny.

But perhaps the most powerful part of their TikTok journey has been the engagement itself.

The comments section beneath their videos is not simply filled with emojis or casual reactions. It has become a space where people openly share stories about rescued cats, emotional struggles, pet loss, behavioural concerns, funny moments, and the joy animals bring into everyday life.

“We receive so many messages every single day,” they shared. “People ask us about medicines, food, toys, illnesses, behaviours, and how to properly care for cats. Sometimes the number of messages is so large that we cannot even reply to everyone.”

And yet, they continue trying. Because beyond the views and virality, what matters most to them is the emotional connection TikTok has enabled. “When we post videos and read the comments, people share their own cats, their own experiences, their own stories,” they explained. “That connection makes us truly happy.”

Building a More Compassionate Future, One Purr-fect TikTok at a Time

For Adithya and Ruwani, the true success of CocoBunny Family has never been measured through views, virality, or follower counts on TikTok, but through impact. Behind every playful “purupuruwo” video, relatable cat-parent moment, trending hashtag, and heartwarming interaction is a conscious effort to slowly change the way people think about animals, especially stray and abandoned cats.

The couple hopes their content encourages people to better understand the responsibility, patience, and emotional commitment that comes with raising pets, while also helping reduce abandonment by making cat care knowledge more accessible to everyday Sri Lankans. “If someone watches our content and learns something new, if we can change even one person to love and care for their cats better, then we feel we have already won,” they shared. For them, this mission extends far beyond animals alone.

And while CocoBunny Family has already become a comforting and educational space for thousands of animal lovers on TikTok, the couple hints that this journey is only getting started, with bigger dreams brewing for stray and abandoned cats in the future, so stay tuned.

Because if Coco and Bunny have proven anything at all, it is that even the tiniest paws can leave the biggest prints on human hearts.
