Former Sri Lankan Olympian Sugath Tillekaratne has entered the Parliament with the 18 member National list of National People’s Power (NPP). The 51-year-old former athlete represented Olympics in Atlanta, US in 1996 and also a member of the Sri Lanka Olympic team at 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Sugath Tillakaratne already holds the Sri Lankan record of 44.61 in the 400m event. Sugath, who has accomplished the difficult task of winning medals at all three meets namely the Asian Athletics Championship, the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. He won gold medal in Asian Games as well as Asian Championship and won bronze medal at Commonwealth Games. He was one time elected as the President of the Sri Lanka Athletics Association.
Sugath, who studied at Vidulipura College, Norton Bridge Nuwara Eliya, presently works as an executive officer of the Sri Lanka Petroleum Corporation. He was an active member of the the Janata Vimukthi Peramuna even before the creation of NPP.
