Sri Lanka’s under-14 girls’ tennis team stormed into the semifinals of the 2025 ITF World Junior Tennis Competition, Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying Event, with a commanding 3-0 victory over Singapore yesterday.
The matches, played on the hard courts of Isa Town in Bahrain saw Sri Lanka dominate both in singles and doubles.
In the first singles match, Annaya Norbet delivered a powerful performance, defeating Chen Kelly 7-5, 6-1. After a closely contested first set, Norbet found her rhythm, overpowering her opponent with a series of strong baseline shots and accurate serves.
The second singles match saw Sahansa Damsiluni continue Sri Lanka’s winning momentum. She confidently beat One Samanth 6-2, 6-2, using her aggressive playing style and sharp volleys to control the match from start to finish.
Sri Lanka sealed the victory in the doubles match, where the pair of Eliza Kahagalla and Annaya Norbert outclassed Woo Chitlin and Ong Samanth 7-5, 6-2. Their excellent teamwork and effective net play proved too strong for the Singaporean duo.
With this dominant 3-0 win, Sri Lanka secured their spot in the semifinals of the tournament. The team is now looking forward to continuing their impressive form as they aim for a place in the finals.
The Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying Event, held from February 17 to 22, 2025, features the best junior talent in the region, with teams competing for a chance to qualify for the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals later this year. (SJ)
