55The 95th edition of the Battle of the Maroons, one of Colombo’s most iconic cricket rivalries, will be played from February 28 to March 2 at the SSC Ground. This year marks a historic moment, as for the first time ever, the match will be held over three thrilling days, with both Ananda College and Nalanda College battling for the Dr. N.M. Perera Trophy.
Ananda College will be led by Ashinsa Nainayaka, a top bowler who took 55 wickets in 12 matches last season, including four five-wicket hauls.
Meanwhile, Sadev Samarasinghe, captain of Nalanda College, scored 228 runs in six matches last season overcoming an injury.
A remarkable feat, Samarasinghe also became one of the fastest players to surpass 1,000 career runs, finishing the 2023/24 season with over 1,200 runs to his name.
Ananda holds the upper hand in the historic rivalry, leading with 12 wins, while Nalanda has won 7 times. Ananda last lifted the Dr. N.M. Perera Trophy in 2003, and Nalanda claimed it most recently in 2022. After last year’s draw, this year’s clash is highly anticipated.
