Cybersecurity is no longer merely a back-office technical concern but a critical pillar of national security, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne said last week.
He was speaking at the ‘SL Scam Shield’ Executive Breakfast Forum, organised by the Ministry of Digital Economy, Google Cloud, and NCINGA.
He outlined the Government’s core vision of setting up an interconnected, proactive “Unified National Shield”. This initiative aims to ensure that every citizen — from a farmer in Anuradhapura, to a grandmother in Matara, and a young entrepreneur in Jaffna — can engage with the digital economy with complete trust and structural safety.
The high-level forum aimed to strengthen citizen security within Sri Lanka’s digital transformation framework and to safeguard the public against escalating digital financial fraud and cyber threats.
The discussions focused extensively on the severe impact of increasingly sophisticated financial scams driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), including voice cloning and identity fabrication.
