Sri Lanka General Insurance to honour Fox Hill SuperCross death claims

Sri Lanka General Insurance will go out of their way to honour the claims that will arise in the aftermath of the 7 deaths of the Fox Hill Supercross on April 21,organized by the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa and Sri Lanka Association of Motor Sports (SLAS) held last Sunday.

The accident is the worst ever in the history of motor racing history. In the 1960 Nuwara Eliya Races and in 1990’s Galle races one spectator each died. COO, Sri Lanka General Insurance, Priyantha Perera said that they came in as an official Insurance provider of the event and after receiving the claim submissions they will honour the claims.

“Since this is a huge tragedy that should not have occurred we are really sorry for the deceased and we will go out of the way to provide ‘some kind of comfort’ to their next of kin by providing the best death insurance remunerationfor them.”

According to new motor traffic rules if a pedestrian is killed by a motor vehicle he is entailed to a sum of Rs. 500,000. “However in this instance the dead are classified as spectators and rules are different. However as a leading and a responsible insurance company Sri Lanka Insurance will offer the best death cover claim to them.”

Asked if the insurance cover would also be extended to spectators who are currently receiving treatment he answered in the negative. “In this instance our liabilities/agreement are only for deaths.”

Currently around 20 are hospitalized with two in the intensive care unit. This leaves a question as to who will spend for the after care of patients revving treatment when they leave hospital and the relatives are looking towards the organizers. A senior official from SLAS said that they and the Sri Lanka Army made all funeral arrangements at their expense. “In addition we will provide around Rs. 500,000 to Rs. one million insurance cover for the 7 spectators who died from the incident. The Sri Lanka Army too would do the same.”

He also said that the people receiving treatment too would be given insurance cover. Former motor racing administrator, Mahesh Gammanpila said that they were involved in 25 of the 26 motor races at Fox Hill and not a single spectator was injured. “We went out of the way to ensure their safety and did our job well.”

When such negligence happens it would give the proper and much needed marketing feedback for sponsors.
