Restoration work on six archaeologically significant shrines damaged by Cyclone Ditwah is set to commence this month.
Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, W.P. Senadheera, said Rs. 550 million has been allocated for the project, which will be carried out by the Central Cultural Fund.
He added that Rs. 40 million has already been released to restore 58 additional shrines, while a further Rs. 200 million will be allocated soon for another 201 sites.
Meanwhile, reconstruction of the Elahera Anicut, also damaged by the cyclone, is scheduled to begin on 10 May.
Acting Director General of the Department of Archaeology, Senarath Wickramasinghe, said the repairs will be carried out by engineers from the Irrigation Department under archaeological supervision.
