The plantations enterprise reform programme is all set to roll out with the Cabinet of Ministers this week approving the proposal. The proposal, submitted by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, will pave the way for the effective utilisation of lands where no cultivation is taking place.Sri Lanka currently has large extents of land owned by State plantation companies that are not used productively due to institutional conflicts and lack of capital. Such lands belong to Janatha Estate Development Board and the Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation.
In an effort to capitalise on the land available, a proposal was made to lease the lands to selected investors who have the potential to grow crops and raise livestock to cater to the export market.Accordingly, the project that aims at bringing multiple benefits to the society by involving local entrepreneurs was green lighted by the Cabinet.
