Lankan Powerlifters bag 24 medals

Sri Lankan powerlifters who participated in the Commonwealth Powerlifting Tournament held in South Africa won 14 gold medals,nine silver medals and one bronze medal and arrived at Katunayake Airport on October 15.

This tournament was held in Sun City, South Africa from October 4 to 15 with the participation of about 1,000 athletes from Commonwealth countries.

A group of officials from the Sri Lanka Powerlifting Association and a group of parents, relatives and friends of these athletes also came to Katunayake Airport to welcome them.

Rasitha de Silva, who went to South Africa on a tourist visa without the approval of the Sri Lanka Sports Ministry and the Sri Lanka Powerlifting Association, had won a gold medal in this tournament.

Ransilu Jayathilaka, the captain of the Sri Lanka Powerlifting team who took Rasitha to the event, has been deported by the South African government for having quarelled with Rasitha during the competition
