The Layton Cup opened with an exciting day of boxing at the Royal MAS Arena, showcasing the talent of nearly 150 top male and female boxers. The championship, organized by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), featured 12 thrilling bouts.
Four-time Stubbs Shield winner THN Jinadasa, now representing the Police, delivered an impressive performance in the Minimum weight (46-48kg) category. Jinadasa, a silver medallist from last year’s Nationals, demonstrated excellent technique and skill as he outpointed Navy’s GKGWU Kumara in a masterful display of southpaw precision.
In the women’s division, last year’s most scientific boxer, Ishara Thushari Perera, continued to shine. Competing in the Light Fly (48-50kg) category, the mother of three dominated MDK Devindi from Hanwella Rajasinghe Boxing Club, using her superior reach and accuracy after moving down from 57kg to her natural weight class.
Other notable performances included Navy’s EWA Sadaruwan, who edged out a narrow split decision in the Featherweight (54-57kg) division, and Army’s WPSK Ranasinghe, who delivered a stunning first-round knockout in the Heavyweight (86-92kg) category.
This year’s Layton Cup has generated exceptional excitement, as the semifinals and finals will be held on the beaches of Negombo for the first time on October 4 and the championship will also serve as trials for creating a National boxing pool, a process that has not occurred in eight years. This initiative is part of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka’s (BASL) ambitious development program, led by President Dr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara.
