High blood pressure cases on the rise in Sri Lanka: Health experts warn

Health authorities in Sri Lanka have warned of a rising number of high blood pressure cases across the country, urging the public to take greater care in monitoring and controlling both systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels.

Consultant Physician, Dr. Suranga Manilgama said that a systolic blood pressure reading of 140 mmHg or higher is considered high blood pressure (hypertension), while a reading below 90 mmHg is considered low blood pressure (hypotension).

Meanwhile, experts note that early detection of blood pressure abnormalities is important for maintaining good health.

He said that alcohol consumption, smoking, lack of sleep, mental stress, unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise are key contributing factors to the condition.

Health officials warn that uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to serious health complications, including heart failure, stroke and kidney disease.

Proper medication adherence and following medical advice are essential for effective control. A balanced diet, including reducing high-salt foods, is also recommended.

However, early detection, lifestyle changes and regular health check-ups to keep blood pressure within a healthy range are also better practices, he said.
