The National Institute of Sports Science has stated that first aid and medical services should be mandatory at Sinhala and Tamil New Year events due to high temperatures.
Dr. Dhammika Senanayake noted that outdoor activities such as marathons and cycling events increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
He stated that temperatures exceeding 30°C, combined with high humidity, raise health risks, especially when the heat index exceeds 32°C.
Organisers have been urged to provide medical support, inform nearby hospitals, and schedule events earlier in the day to reduce exposure to heat.
