Dinara de Silva of St Bridget’s Convent made history by winning her second consecutive Women’s Singles crown at the 109th National Tennis Championship, held at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts in Colombo yesterday.
De Silva, the reigning Women’s Singles champion from 2023, secured her second consecutive title by defeating former national champion Rukshika Wijesooriya in a thrilling Women’s Open Singles final.
The match was a fierce three-set battle. The experienced 25-year-old Wijesooriya took the first set 6-2, but 15-year-old De Silva staged a strong comeback, winning the next two sets 6-2 and 6-1 to retain her title.
Earlier in the tournament, top-seeded Dinara de Silva also achieved her third consecutive Under-18 Singles Championship victory, even though she is still only 15. She won the Under-18 title in 2022, 2023, and now in 2024, continuing her dominance in the junior category.
In the Mixed Doubles final, Apna Perera and Inuki Jayaweera emerged victorious, defeating Dilvan Herath and Hasali Gajaba 6-3, 1-6, 10-4. This win marks Apna Perera’s second title of the tournament, having previously claimed the Men’s Singles championship.
With this victory, number one seeded Davis Cup player Apna Perera completed a remarkable triple crown at this year’s National Championship. He won the Men’s Open Singles, Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles, displayingg his outstanding talent and dominance in the tournament.
