After an intense week of competition, India’s Shamit Dhakhane finished as the runner-up in the 133rd Sri Lanka Amateur Championship, as Sri Lankan Secretary of Golf Anouck Chitty secured the runner-up title in the Sri Lanka Ladies’ Amateur Championship. The tournament, the oldest amateur golf championship outside the United Kingdom, concluded on Sunday at the Royal Colombo Golf Club.
Dhakhane’s journey to the final was nothing short of remarkable, as he navigated a challenging draw to reach his runner-up finish. In the semi-final, he edged past India’s Suraj Joshi with a narrow 1-up victory. This followed his quarter-final upset over Manoj Sreeramappa, who had led the leaderboard in the qualifying rounds. Dhakhane delivered a stunning performance against the tournament favourite Sreeramappa, securing a decisive 3/2 victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Dhakhane defeated Sri Lanka’s top-ranked amateur golfer, Reshan Algama, with an impressive 6/4 win in the top 16 round. His momentum continued in the quarter-finals, where he overcame Rahul Batra of India by a dominant 7/5 margin. Ultimately, however, he fell short in the final match, where Sri Lanka’s Jevahn Sathasivam claimed the championship title as the second youngest amateur golfer of Sri Lanka.
On the ladies’s side, Anouck Chitty excelled. She advanced to the semi-finals with a commanding 9/7 win over Kaya Abhayarathne in the quarter-final. In the semi-final, Chitty faced Tiru Jesudasan and emerged victorious with a 4/2 score. However, in the final match, she faced Sri
Lanka’s number one female golfer, Kaya Daluwatte, who proved too strong, defeating Chitty by eight up over 18 holes, with Chitty conceding the final afternoon session.
