After a 14-year gap, Sri Lanka will take on Myanmar in two international football friendlies at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar. The first match will be played today, October 10, at 3 PM Sri Lanka time, with the second encounter scheduled for October 13.
Led by goalkeeper Sujan Perera, Sri Lanka, currently ranked 200th in the FIFA rankings, will face a strong Myanmar team ranked 167th. Sri Lankan player Adhavan Rajamohan acknowledged the challenge at the pre-match briefing, saying that these two friendlies will be tough games. He added that Myanmar has many talented players, but their captain Maung Maung Lwin will be the toughest opponent.
Sri Lanka’s head coach, Abdullah Al Mutairi, emphasized the team’s development. He stated that since their victory against Cambodia in the Asian qualifiers, the team has been improving. He mentioned they are not just here for results but to push the team’s limits and assess their performance. He also confirmed that they are well-prepared and ready to give their best.
Due to injuries of three key senior players – Jack Hingert, Jason Thayaparan, and Claudio Kammerknecht, Sri Lanka called up three under-20 players—Chalana Chameera, Raul Suresh, and Mohamed Thilham—to strengthen the squad for these crucial matches.
Myanmar’s captain, Maung Maung Lwin, expressed confidence ahead of the games. He mentioned that they have studied Sri Lanka carefully and know their key players. He believes their team spirit is strong and they can achieve good results.
Myanmar’s head coach, U Myo Hlaing Win, echoed this sentiment. He stated that they are fully prepared and recognize that Sri Lanka has improved. He also mentioned that they respect their progress and will aim for a positive result.
