Govt. accelerates recovery efforts after Cyclone Ditwah

The Government is taking steps to fast-track relief and recovery operations following Cyclone Ditwah, according to the Prime Minister Media Division.

A high-level discussion chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Harini Amarasuriya was held at Temple Trees on 28 March, focusing on speeding up assistance to affected communities.

Officials briefed the Prime Minister on ongoing efforts, including compensation payments through District Secretariats and the operation of safety camps for displaced families.

Special attention was given to the estate sector Malaiyaha Tamil community, particularly those without legal land ownership, with authorities noting the need for policy decisions to ensure access to compensation and support.

Plans for long-term recovery were also outlined, including the construction of 20,000 new houses, renovation of 115,000 partially damaged homes, and financial assistance of up to Rs. 5 million for rebuilding.

Authorities are also exploring the development of apartment complexes with public facilities in urban areas.

Officials emphasized continued monitoring of the physical, psychological, and social well-being of affected communities, especially vulnerable groups.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya stressed the importance of rebuilding in safer locations and maintaining close communication with affected communities to ensure resilience against future disasters.
