Colombo-Badulla train journey ranked 7th best scenic ride for 2025

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has come into fresh spotlight in the new year with the Colombo-Badulla train journey being ranked among the world’s top 10 train rides to experience in 2025.

The iconic train route has been listed as the 7th best in the world by Lonely Planet, a leading global travel guide known for its expertise in travel insights and recommendations.

Commenting on the ranking, Travel Talks Asia stated that the recognition serves as a testament to Sri Lanka’s growing appeal as a must-visit destination.

“Being featured in this prestigious list affirms Sri Lanka’s commitment to offering exceptional travel experiences to travellers,” the guide noted.

Spanning over 290 kilometres, the Colombo-Badulla train is operated by the Railway Department, which runs five daily trains on the line.

The journey, popularly referred to as the ‘Ella Odyssey’ by tourists, is popular for its stunning views of tea plantations, misty mountains and waterfalls, with key stops at locations such as Ella, Nanu Oya and Haputale.

The ranking by Lonely Planet is part of its annual list of the world’s best travel train journeys for travellers looking for unique experiences.
