Former National champion Chalitha Ranjana from Seylan Bank once again came to the fore at the 65th Mercantile Leauge Table Tennis Championship when he guides the Seylan Bank to the final of the A division category.
Chalitha has had an illustrious career with numerous accolades, both locally and internationally. In 2024, Chalitha emerged as the champion in the Open Master’s Singles. He was the Runner-Up in the Open Men’s Doubles, and reached the Semi-finals in the Open Men’s Singles at Mercantile tournament.
Chalitha a product of Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda this time performed well at his hometown’s new SRS Sports Complex at Ambalangoda.
Chalitha’s local accomplishments are remarkable, having won the Mercantile singles title for nine years and consistently reaching the finals in the Mercantile Team Event ‘A’ Division for the last 20 years, either as a winner or runner-up.
His international achievements include winning a Bronze Medal at the Commonwealth Championship in 2004, securing one Silver and three Bronze Medals at the South Asian Games in 2010 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and earning Bronze Medals at the South Asian Games in 1999 in Kathmandu, Nepal and in 2003 in Islamabad, Pakistan. Chalitha also excelled at the New Zealand Open, winning multiple medals in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
Chalitha has been recognized as the Best Table Tennis Player of the Year in 2019 (Mercantile) and in 2007 and 2008 (National Sports Games). He was the National Table Tennis Champion for four years and was ranked the No. 1 player from 1999 to 2004 and again from 2008 to 2010. He alo do coaching to give support for youngsters.
Chalitha and his team showcased exceptional talent and determination to finished runners up at the Mercantile Leauge tournament in the ‘A’ Division, demonstrating their skill and competitive spirit throughout the tournament. Meanwhile, the Seylan Bank Women’s team secured the 2nd Runner-Up in the ‘C’ Division. They also took part at the Mercantile Knockout Table Tennis Championship to finish runners up.
