Sri Lankan athletes have a packed schedule in 2025 with 11 major international events, including the World Athletics Championships from September 13-21 in Tokyo.
Sri Lanka Athletics is preparing top athletes with a focus on the World Athletics Championships, while the South Asian Senior Athletics Championship is also a key event next year, scheduled to take place in Ranchi, India, on April 5-6.
Additionally, the World Indoor Championship from March 21-23 in Nanjing, China, and the World Relay Championship from May 10-11 in Guangzhou, China, are significant events on the calendar.
Two more events, the Asian Youth Games in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and the 14th South Asian Games, are also set to take place next year, though the specific dates are yet to be confirmed.
The Asian Youth Games are expected to be held in September, and the South Asian Games are likely to take place in October in Lahore, Pakistan.
Sri Lankan throwers are expected to participate in the Asian Throwing Championship in Makpo, South Korea, from June 14-15, while the Asian Marathon Championship is scheduled for March 23 in Pattaya, Thailand. Athletes also have opportunities to compete in other international events, including the Australian Open, Chinese Taipei Open, Hungarian Grand Prix, and the Indian Grand Prix 1-4 series. These international meets are essential for ranking improvements and valuable exposure.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) has organised several domestic events. The 103rd National Athletic Championship, scheduled for August 1-3 at Sugathadasa Stadium, will be the final selection trial for the South Asian Games. Additionally, the 64th Junior National Championship will take place from June 13-15.
SLA also plans to conduct two senior and youth selection trials for the South Asian Senior Championship and the Asian Under-18 Championship at Sugathadasa Stadium. The first trial is scheduled for February 8-9, and the second for March 8-9.
