Sri Lanka women’s cricket team, led by Chamari Athapaththu, will depart today (23) to participate in the ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled from October 3 to 20 in the UAE. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Acting Secretary Krishantha Kapuwatte stated that the women’s team for this World Cup is sponsored by ‘Sunquick.’ He appreciated the local sponsor for supporting the national women’s team, who recently won the Asia Cup. “This sponsorship partnership continues to strengthen our women’s team, which has recently achieved significant victories against top teams such as England, New Zealand, and South Africa,” Kapuwatte added. “It’s a great opportunity for the team to excel at the World Cup after a series of successful performances.”
Sri Lanka women’s cricket captain Chamari Athapaththu sees the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 as a major platform to showcase the growth of women’s cricket. “This World Cup is a great opportunity for us to display how far we’ve come from small beginnings,” said Chamari.
Looking back on past experiences, Chamari shared, “We have participated in many World Cups, and each one is a valuable opportunity. Last year in South Africa, we showed glimpses of our potential as a big tournament team, but we fell short in some tight games, like losing to South Africa by just three runs. It was a learning experience, and we are ready to take the next step.”
“Our squad is a solid mix of young talent and experienced players. We gave several players opportunities before finalizing the squad, and this time, experienced spinner Inoka Ranaweera is back in the squad,” she said.
“We have young stars like Harshitha Samarawickrama, Vishmi Gunaratne, and Kavisha Dilhari, who are capable of winning matches for us, while experienced players like Nilakshi de Silva and Anushka Sanjeewani add stability. Our bowling unit, led by rising star Inoshi Fernando, is making waves in the rankings, and the team is well-knit and ready to give our best.”
“We know we can’t underestimate any team in T20 cricket. A few quick wickets or big shots can change a game in an instant. Teams like India, Australia, New Zealand, England, and South Africa have proven their strength in these tournaments, so we’re aware of the challenges ahead,” she said.
Head coach Rumesh Ratnayake praised the team’s recent performances but reminded them that the World Cup is a tougher stage. “We’ll take it one game at a time, stay focused, and play with a positive mindset,” he said.
