Sri Lanka’s hopes diminished by Myanmar’s 2-0 Football win

Sri Lanka suffered a disappointing defeat against Myanmar, losing 2-0 in the first leg of their two-match FIFA International series at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon yesterday.

The match marked the first meeting between the two teams in 14 years, with Sri Lanka ranked 200th in the FIFA World Rankings, while Myanmar sits at 157th.

The home team got off to a strong start, with Lwin Moe Aung scoring the opening goal in the 16th minute. Just four minutes later, Sri Lanka had a golden opportunity to equalize when Adhavan Rajmohan’s corner kick was headed by Chalana Chameera. However, it sailed over the net, missing the chance to level the score.

As the match continued, Myanmar’s Kyaw Min Oo received a yellow card in the 44th minute for knocking down Sri Lankan player Adhavan Rajmohan. Just before halftime, Sri Lankan goalkeeper and captain Sujan Perera made an incredible save, preventing a second goal and keeping his team in the game as they went into the break trailing 1-0.

In the second half, things took a turn for Sri Lanka. In the 52nd minute, Myanmar was awarded a penalty kick, which they successfully converted, extending their lead to 2-0. Captain Maung Maung Lwin scored in the 53rd minute, sealing the victory for Myanmar.

The final score was 2-0, leaving Sri Lanka with work to do in the second leg of the series, which will take place on October 13 at the same venue. Sri Lanka will look to bounce back and make a strong showing to overcome this challenging start. (SJ)
