Sri Lanka’s rising tennis talents, Sandithi Usgodaarachchi, Akesha Silva, and Annaya Norbet, excelled sweeping past Lebanon on the second day of the ITF World Junior Tennis Asia/Oceania Pre Qualifying tournament, organized by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association at SLTA in Colombo yesterday.
The Sri Lankan girls’ team displayed exceptional performance, securing a decisive 3-0 victory against Lebanon. In the first singles match, Sandithi Usgodaarachchi of Musaeus College triumphed over Haifa Taha Al Jundi with a score of 6/3, 6/3. Akesha Silva of Newstead College continued the winning streak in the second singles, defeating Reina El Jessr with a scoreline of 7/6, 6/4. The Sri Lanka junior doubles team, comprising Sandithi Usgodaarachchi and Annaya Norbert of Holy Family Convent, sealed the victory by defeating Reina El Jessr and Haifa Taha Al Jundi with scores of 7/5, 6/2.With 21 boys’ teams and 14 girls’ teams in contention, Sri Lanka stands among the strong contenders, including teams from Bahrain, Cambodia, India, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Oman, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkmenistan, UAE, and Yemen for boys, and Guam, Indonesia, Lebanon, Maldives, Pacific Oceania, and Turkmenistan for girls.
The Sri Lankan boys’ team has a day of rest today and will face Lebanon in their next match tomorrow. On the other hand, the Sri Lankan girls’ team is set to clash with Kyrgyzstan in their upcoming match today. Tennis enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating more stellar performances from the Sri Lankan juniors as they continue with excellent performance in the ITF World Junior Tennis tournament.
