The BNP Paribas World Team Cup Qualifying Tournament for wheelchair tennis kicked off at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) courts in Colombo on Wednesday, attracting top players vying for a spot in the prestigious World Cup.
The tournament, which runs until March 2, features the participation of world-class athletes, including Yui Kamiji, the world number one in women’s wheelchair tennis. Teams from Japan, Kazakhstan, India, and Chinese Taipei are competing in the women’s category, while the men’s category includes teams from Japan, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Kazakhstan, and Iran.
Sri Lanka’s men’s wheelchair tennis team, which previously qualified for the World Cup, is also in the fray, hoping to secure their place once again. The top two teams from this tournament will advance to the World Cup.. The event was officially opened on Wednesday morning by Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Deputy Minister of Defence of Sri Lanka, who attended as the Chief Guest. Also present were Iqbal Bin Issack, President of the SLTA, Ms. Anastasia Rentouli, Senior Coordinator for Wheelchair Tennis at the International Tennis Federation, Pradeep Goonasekera, General Secretary of the SLTA, S. Sudarshan, Treasurer of the SLTA, Major General Shiran Abeysekera, Chairman of the SLTA Wheelchair Tennis Committee, Anupa Matthamagoda, Head of Tennis Development at the SLTA, and Nithyaananthan Sylan, Tournament Director.
