Sri Lanka’s only ‘glocal’ supermarket chain, SPAR Sri Lanka, has announced a significant expansion, marking a major milestone with the opening of two flagship outlets in Kandy and Kurunegala.

The move will take the brand beyond the Western Province, fulfilling a long-standing commitment to bring international retail standards to regional markets while setting new benchmarks in convenience and quality across the country.

As SPAR Sri Lanka marks seven years of operations, the expansion into Kandy and Kurunegala signals a continued investment in modernising the retail landscape beyond the Western Province. Already established as a recognised name both locally and globally, the latest expansion reflects SPAR Sri Lanka’s long-term vision to deliver a premium retail experience across the country, further strengthening its position as a trusted and accessible supermarket chain.

The Kandy outlet was opened recently with the Kurunegala branch set to follow in April. The launch is timed to align with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April, an auspicious and busy festive season, helping ease increased shopping demand. While Kandy remains a key cultural hub, Kurunegala’s rapid development and improved connectivity position it as a prime location for the brand’s next phase of growth.

SPAR Sri Lanka operates through an equal partnership between Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. (CBL) and SPAR South Africa. Globally, the brand spans 48 countries with over 13,900 stores, enabling the local operation to combine international retail expertise with a strong understanding of the Sri Lankan market.

SPAR Sri Lanka General Manager Oliver Sabatino noted that his international experience with the brand, including in Poland and South Africa, has been helpful in enhancing operational standards locally. His role includes training store teams and overseeing new branch operations to ensure consistent service and quality.

In addition to store operations, he oversees distribution centres and the central kitchen, where product development and food innovation take place. This ensures that more than 1,000 international products available in-store meet consumer expectations.

Explaining the ‘glocal’ philosophy, SPAR Sri Lanka CEO Kumar De Silva said it represents more than a marketing concept, reflecting a retail strategy that combines global standards in layout, hygiene, and organisation with a strong focus on local sourcing.

“Over the past seven years, the focus has been on building a product range that blends international variety with local favourites. Fresh food remains central to this approach, with dedicated sections for produce, bakery, meat, and ready-to-eat meals,” De Silva said.

He also highlighted the recently launched SPAR Rewards App, which enables customers to access exclusive discounts and stay updated on ongoing promotions, enhancing convenience through a digital platform.

“The transformation of the retail sector means supermarkets are no longer just places to purchase groceries, but spaces where convenience, quality, and experience come together. These new outlets bring global best practices while remaining responsive to local needs,” he added.

SPAR Sri Lanka Commercial Director Daham Gunasena said it is located at 27B, George E. De Silva Mawatha, describing it as a long-awaited addition for customers in the central region. He noted that expanding beyond the Western Province remains a key strategic priority.

Each outlet is expected to generate around 100 jobs, creating employment opportunities for 200 youth across both locations. Operating on a two-shift system from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., the stores offer structured career paths in a professional retail environment.

Gunasena added that employees receive specialised training in areas such as butchery, bakery, and coffee shop operations, equipping them with skills aligned to international standards and enabling long-term career progression.

He further highlighted SPAR’s engagement with over 50 local suppliers, providing them direct market access. This creates opportunities for small businesses to potentially expand into international markets through SPAR’s global network.

“In today’s economic climate, affordability is essential. Our private label range of over 150 SPAR-branded products meets global quality standards while being priced 10% to 15% lower than leading brands,” he said.

To mark the new openings, SPAR has introduced significant discounts on nearly 500 products. The outlets will also feature international and wellness items, snacks, and a dedicated pet care section with accessories for dogs and cats.

Addressing the growing demand for online shopping, Gunasena noted that the company has strengthened its e-commerce operations, supported by an in-house delivery team and third-party partners. This ensures reliable service, even during periods of transport disruption, with orders typically fulfilled within the same day or the next.
