The Schools Netball tournament gives a good platform for young lasses to showcase their talents. Credit should go to the Schools Netball Association, while Nestlé Lanka and Milo give their continued support for the success of this tournament, said Bernhard Stefan, Managing Director of Nestlé Lanka, who was the chief guest on the final day of the three-day event at Uyanwatte Stadium, Matara.
More than 4,000 players took part in the final stage, which included age groups under 13, 15, 17, and 19 from two divisions, A and B. Winners and runners-up from each group received their awards at this event. Additionally, an exhibition game of mixed netball was played before the finals. This was the first time mixed teams were involved in the Milo Schools tournament.
Nirodha Abeywickrama, the President of the Schools Netball Association, pointed out that many outstation schools, which lack facilities, participated in this event and gained valuable match exposure.
After the Under-13 game between Musaeus College and Galnewa MMV Anuradhapura, which Musaeus won 14-1, the parents of Musaeus players donated new pairs of shoes to all Galnewa netball players, who had played without shoes.
This act was greatly appreciated by all and sends a good message, said the School Netball President.
For the past 30 years, Nestlé Lanka has supported the event, and players who performed during this series now represent the national team. This tournament is the major event for school players, added the Schools Netball President.
