Mahamaya’s golden performance at Port City Swim Championship

Swimming powerhouse Mahamaya Girls College Kandy clinched the 3km championship title and an individual bronze medal at the inaugural Annual Port City Open Water Swimming Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU), concluded on Sunday at the scenic Beach Park in Port City Colombo.

The 12-member Under-15 swimming team, led by captain Sathushmi Divyanjali and vice-captain Rohansi de Silva, performed exceptionally well, securing the gold medal in the fiercely competitive 3km team event. Their remarkable achievement added another chapter to the rich history of Mahamaya Girls College in the aquatic sport.

Aside from the impressive team victory, a Mahamaya swimmer bagged a bronze medal in the 1km Under-12 Girls individual event. The medal came courtesy of Newli Karunaratne, a swimmer from the Hill Country who made her debut in open water swimming at the competition. Despite being new to swimming in the sea, Karunaratne displayed great courage and determination. “It was my first time swimming in the sea, and although I was nervous, I managed to win the bronze. With more experience, I believe I could have secured a better medal,” she shared after the event. Karunaratne, who holds all-island records in indoor pool swimming, is clearly one to watch in future competitions.

The outstanding performances of Mahamaya Girls College were made possible by the guidance of their dedicated coaching team. Head Coach Sugath Liyanahewa, along with Assistant Coach Ajith Roshan and Teacher-in-Charge Ms. Priyanga Herath, have been instrumental in nurturing the talent of these young swimmers.

Coach Liyanahewa expressed immense pride in his team’s achievements, saying, “We have trained hard for this moment, and to see our swimmers perform so well in open water is a proof to their dedication and discipline. This victory is a proud moment for Mahamaya Girls College, and we are committed to continuing our journey of success.”
