Calling on passionate individuals to help break the stigma and champion menstrual health across Sri Lanka
In commemoration of Menstrual Hygiene Day on the 28th of May, the H.E.R. Foundation (Help, Empower, Rise) supported by Fems, officially launched its ‘HER Ambassador Programme’, a purpose-driven initiative inviting individuals across Sri Lanka to become advocates for menstrual health and hygiene.
The H.E.R. Foundation supported by Fems, which has reached and educated over 350,000 women across schools, universities, prisons, apparel factories, corporates, and rural communities since 2021, is now taking its mission a step further by empowering a new generation of community leaders who share its vision of a more informed and stigma-free Sri Lanka.
The HER Ambassador Programme is designed to recruit a high-potential, purpose-driven network committed to raising awareness about menstrual health and hygiene. Through this programme, ambassadors will play a pivotal role in educating their communities, challenging deeply rooted taboos, and uplifting girls and women across the island.
The programme includes a structured course open to both medical and non-medical participants, with the programme targeting passionate young individuals, reflecting the Foundation's belief that menstrual health advocacy belongs to everyone.
Upon completing the programme, ambassadors will be formally recognised with a certificate of completion and a LinkedIn badge, affirming their roles as certified HER Ambassadors. Ambassadors will also receive an exclusive programme toolkit including a branded t-shirt and tag.
The H.E.R. Foundation supported by Fems is inviting anyone who is passionate about menstrual health education and social change to join the programme. Whether you are an undergraduate, youth leader, healthcare enthusiast, schoolteacher or community advocate, this is your opportunity to be part of a growing movement that is transforming how Sri Lanka speaks about menstruation.
"The stigma around Menstrual Health and Hygiene is not just a women's issue. It is a community issue. We are calling on passionate individuals who believe in breaking barriers and building a more open, informed society to join us as HER Ambassadors," said Sachini Gamage, General Manager Marketing – Hemas Consumer Brands.
The H.E.R. Foundation supported by Fems was born out of Fems’ long-standing commitment to advance menstrual health and hygiene in Sri Lanka. Building on the foundation laid through the AYA Initiative, which was introduced in 2021 with a focus on affordability, accessibility and awareness, the H.E.R. Foundation was officially launched on Menstrual Hygiene Day in 2023 under the pillars of Help, Empower and Rise. Through this platform, Fems continues to address period poverty, break taboos around menstruation, and empower women and girls to rise above social barriers with greater confidence and knowledge.
Since 2021, its efforts include menstrual health education programmes, monthly sanitary napkin donations to the central prison system, the installation of over 250 sanitary napkin dispensers in public spaces and the launch of Fio, Sri Lanka’s first trilingual period tracking app offering credible menstrual health education and support. Through these initiatives, the Foundation continues to strengthen its mission of creating a more informed, inclusive, and stigma-free society about Menstrual Health Hygiene.
