The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has announced that, starting today (19) a new fuel distribution system based on the last digit of vehicle registration plates.
Under the revised QR system, vehicles with odd-numbered plates (ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9) are permitted to purchase fuel on odd-numbered dates, while those with even-numbered plates (ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8) can buy fuel on even-numbered days.
Today falls on an odd date, so vehicles with registration numbers ending in odd digits are eligible for fuel. CPC Chairman D.J. Rajakaruna stated that individuals who have not yet received their fuel quota will be allowed to obtain fuel today regardless of their vehicle’s plate number, due to procurement issues.
The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has advised vehicle owners to carry relevant documents such as revenue license, registration certificate, insurance, or emission test certificate to verify vehicle identity when necessary.
This measure comes after a period of delays in issuing official number plates, leading some owners to use unofficial plates.
Long queues at fuel stations were observed across the island last night, and the government has introduced hotline numbers (0112 106 767 and 0117 296 130) for reporting violations or illegal fuel distribution.
The CPC warned that legal action will be taken against station owners who fail to comply with the new guidelines.
