Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) has handed over their manifesto to all the three leading parties and if they want to get a 9.6% GDP to the country from the construction industry they need to give industry at least a Rs 1 trillion worth of work, opined Dr. Rohan Karunaratne President CIOB.
He said CIOB had to rescue 5,000 contractors in the field and there are 2,500 remaining in the industry now and it was their duty to look after them in the next two years.
The CIOB Chief said the private sector has to get together and be strong to continue the construction industry and the major barrier of theirs in the past couple of years was price hikes. “As everybody was saying that the Sri Lankan construction industry cost was very high they were asked to do a costing for every type of building.” He said they have developed that document and handed it over to the Sri Lankan Government and other interested parties.
CIOB in addition to disseminating modern building practices among builders and promoting competencies for the builders to reach professional standards also carries forward number of annual programmes such as the World Construction Symposium with the University of Moratuwa, CIOB Exhibition, Annual Awards Ceremony for Sustainable Construction, Green Mark Accreditation, Programme for the sustainable construction, Construction Training with TRACS Programme Seminars, print media magazine of Sri Lanka ‘Construction Today’, submission to National Budget representing construction industry and providing assistance on dispute resolution issues among the industry stakeholders through private and statutory organizations.
“From the above programmes, we are now planning the CIOB Exhibition for 2025, the Construction Expo 2025 by CIOB. The exhibition will be held during the period March 14,15 & 16, 2025 at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre in the BMICH,” he said.
