Chinese firms to invest in dairy farming, export agriculture

Chinese companies are ready to invest in large-scale dairy farming and export-oriented agricultural production in Sri Lanka, with proposals focusing on the use of underutilised State land, according to officials familiar with the discussions.

The proposals were presented by a delegation from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce at a recent meeting with Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lal Kantha. The discussions took place at the Govijana Mandiraya in Battaramulla.

The proposed investments aim to develop large-scale dairy farms and produce vegetables and fruits for export markets. Attention has been directed at unused lands under the control of the Department of the Land Commissioner General, the Land Reform Commission, and the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka.

The Chinese Chamber of Commerce has formally submitted its proposal to the Minister and to the Presidential Secretariat.
