A special discussion was held (24th) at the Minister's Office, "Nila Medura," Narahenpita, between the Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Professor Chandana Abayaratne, and the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, H.E. Andrew Patrick.
Confirming the bilateral relations between the two countries, the Minister appreciated the cooperation extended by the British Government to Sri Lanka during various crisis situations. He also engaged in an extensive discussion regarding future plans for several development sectors in the country.
During the meeting, the High Commissioner pointed out that instead of the existing outdated methods within Sri Lanka's current public service structure, it should undergo structural changes to suit the present and the future. He stated that the British Government is ready to provide maximum support for the necessary human resource training and development. The importance of designing these training programs to align with Sri Lanka's identity and local requirements was also emphasized.
The discussion also touched upon the challenges Sri Lanka faces due to global climate change. The High Commissioner commended the strong resilience and adaptability of Sri Lankans in the face of economic and social crises. Special attention was drawn to the country's recovery due to the crisis management skills of the current President, as well as the success of the measures taken by the present government under its anti-corruption state policy.
Minister Professor Chandana Abayaratne explained that the government is working to remove legal obstacles to hold the Provincial Council elections as soon as possible.
Furthermore, the High Commissioner inquired about the Puttalam district and its future development. The Minister noted that as a district with diverse populations including Sinhalese, Tamils, and Muslims, the peaceful and cooperative coexistence of all communities is an example for the entire country. He further explained the activities related to the renewable energy sector in the Puttalam district.
It was emphasized that the Puttalam district has been identified as an ideal region for Solar and Wind Farms, and the possibility of implementing these projects without harming public life or the environment was discussed. The High Commissioner specifically drew attention to the concept of Offshore Wind energy, and its significance was discussed fundamentally. Stating his intention to visit several districts including Puttalam in the future, the High Commissioner assured the British Government's full support for Sri Lanka’s future development activities.
The Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Mr. S. Alokabandara, Political Advisor to the British High Commission, Mr. Insaaf Markar, and several other ministry officials were present at the occasion.
