BASL launches ‘Beach Boxing’ to promote boxing and sports tourism in Sri Lanka

The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will host the semifinals and finals of the Layton Cup at Negombo Beach on October 4 and 5, as part of a new initiative to promote boxing and boost sports tourism in the country.

BASL Vice President Eric Perera shared the vision behind taking the Layton Cup outdoors. “Boxing is usually an indoor sport in Sri Lanka, attracting a limited crowd. We want to bring the sport to a wider audience, including people who may have never seen boxing before. Hosting the event at Negombo Beach is our way of taking boxing to the people,” he said at a recent press conference held at Royal MAS Arena.

The event will run from 4 PM to 10 PM and will feature thrilling boxing matches along with entertainment such as DJ music and live performances. “It’s going to be a fun-filled event showcasing both boxing and entertainment,” added Perera. While the beach setting presents unique challenges, the local business community has shown strong support. Companies like 3R International, Melwa, and Pyramid Lanka Pvt Ltd have helped arrange the necessary facilities for the boxing ring.

BASL President Dr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara emphasized the significance of this event for promoting sports tourism. “We aim to bring boxing out of indoor arenas into a space where more people, including tourists, can witness it. Boxing has been overshadowed by cricket and rugby for too long in Sri Lanka, and we want to change that,” he stated.

Dr. Bandara also called on the government and corporate sponsors to support boxing as they would other major sports. “Boxing is often overlooked, but it’s worth noting that our first international medal came from this sport. We need government help to thrive and achieve international success,” he explained.

BASL aims to build a strong boxing culture in Sri Lanka, with plans to send several boxers to the 2028 Olympic Games. “We are developing plans to win medals at the Olympics, but we need support from both the government and the corporate sector,” said BASL Assistant Secretary Brigadier Kasun Adikari.

The Layton Cup at Negombo Beach marks a bold step in elevating boxing and attracting a new audience. Dr. Bandara concluded, “We invite everyone—families, school children, and boxing enthusiasts—to join us for this exciting event. Together, we can create a stronger future for boxing in Sri Lanka.” (SJ)
