Western Province schoolchildren rally for a future without road accidents

Hundreds of schoolchildren from across the Western Province gathered in Colombo yesterday to promote road safety through art at a special competition aimed at creating awareness about preventing road accidents.

The Western Province round of the annual art competition organized by the National Transport Commission (NTC) under the theme “Let’s Rally from School for a Tomorrow Without Road Accidents” was held yesterday (7) at Lumbini College.

The competition was organized with the full approval of the Ministry of Education (Sri Lanka) and the Western Province Department of Education, with the main objective of raising awareness about road safety by encouraging the creative talents of schoolchildren.

The preliminary rounds of the competition were conducted at school level, where students submitted drawings based on the theme. The best drawings from each grade were selected by officials of the Ministry of Education to compete in the provincial finals.

Accordingly, around 200 students from Grades 1 to 12 participated in the final competition, which was held live from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. yesterday.

Winners were selected based on the evaluation of officials from the Ministry of Education. Students who secured first, second and third places in each grade category were awarded bicycles, while other participants received certificates and vouchers.

The event was held under the patronage of Kapila C. Perera, Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development.

Among those present were P. H. Chandrapala, Chairman of the National Transport Commission, Director General Mirando, and members of the Board of Directors of the National Transport Commission.
