Right-wing Dinuka Perera scored a try at the stroke of full time as unimpressive Royal College edged Kingswood College 13-6 in a close Dialog Schools League rugby tournament match at Pallekele, littered with missed opportunities for both teams yesterday (17).
Royal trailing 6-5 from the 15th minute made heavy weather of putting away their profligate hosts, and finally managed to put some daylight between them and their opponents first in the 51st minute via a Simak Shafeeq penalty goal, and then with the touchdown from Perera right at the death.
Kingswood for their part had a welter of opportunities to keep the scoreboard ticking, but conspired to fluff their lines in their own backyard, and were forced to settle for two Shamith Shafraz (full back) penalty goals in the first half.
Royal, who collected their tally from two tries and a penalty goal, scored their first try in the second minute off a trademark rolling maul with captain and backrower Disas Pathirana being the beneficiary, but afterwards struggled to assert its authority until the final quarter.
Kingswood did well to mix it up with the visitors in the set pieces, but stood to rue its inability to finish off their moves and thus came up short on the day.
