Top local shuttlers in action at Southern Province Badminton Tourney

Most of the top ranked local shuttlers will take part in the Southern Province Badminton Association (SPBA) All Island Open Badminton Championship which will be held from March 10-16 at the District Sports Complex in Dadalla Galle.

The tournament organized by Southern Province Badminton Association now accepting entries for this All Island ranking level 1 competition which is  sanctioned by Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB).

Last time this tournament  was played at Ambalangoda but this time it will be at newly built Dadalla Stadium which conducted two International Badminton tournaments last year After the successful Northern and Eastern Provinces tournaments now good opportunity for the Southern Province tournament to showcase the talents of local players and this is All Island tournament and top ranking players will be in action at this tournament which alsoa  battle between top ranking players.

SLB expected to promote this sport through this provincial level tournaments and they recently formed the Sabaragamuwa Province Badminton Association and hope to give chance to this tournament.

The present women’s open champion Ranithma Liyanage from Baddegama Christ Church College while doubles champion and former National singles champion Buwaneka Gunatilleka a  product of Richmond College and both of them once again in action in their own Province Tournament. The promising shuttlers from Dharmasoka Ambalangoda, Richmond, Southlands BMV Galle have good chance to take part in  this tournament to gain experience.

The seven day competition will feature a wide range of events from Under-11 to Under-19 in the Junior category and Over-30 to Over-70 in the Senior category. However, the main attraction of the competition will be the Open events comprising of Men’s and Women’s Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles, with the losers of Men’s and Women’s Singles from their first games guaranteed a passage to the Plate Segment.

The main draw seeding will be determined based on SLB Ranking as of March 3rd, followed by the draw on March 5 at No.2, Cambridge Terrace, Colombo 7. Entries will close on February 28 at noon.Entries can be submitted online or by contacting Sadeesha Adithya on 0761759017.

A combined prize money of Rs.750,000 for all events based on the number of entries will be on offer, in addition to trophies, medals and certificates guaranteed for winners, runners-up and semi-finalists of each event of the tournament. Junior winners will receive appropriate gifts  instead of prize money, according to the decision taken by the tournament organisers.
