Fourth year coloursman, all rounder, safe fielder, and District and Provincial Player Suwahas Gawrawa Fernando has brought honour and immense glory to his school Prince of Wales’ College Moratuwa with his deeds in the field of cricket.
Suwahas who hails from Koralawella, Moratuwa was born on 4th September 2006 and initially admitted to Leeds
International School Panadura in 2012 and in 2014 he was drafted to his present school in 2014. When he was in Grade Two he showed a keenness to cricket and his parents Sujeewa Fernando and Roshini Fernando noticing this made arrangements to admit him to Anoj Fernando Cricket Academy, Moratuwa.
Then in 2017 he was selected to the school under 13 cricket team and he bats right hand top order and bowls right arm off spin. In his first year in under 13 he scored 330 runs with two half centuries and claimed 21 wickets with one five wicket haul and in his second year captaining the team he passed the 400 run mark with four fifties and bagged 16 scalps.
In his under 15 first year there was no cricket due to Coronavirus and in his second year he got 290 runs with a fifty and played for the District Team and he was the Vice Captain of Colombo South Zone. In his first year in the under 17 he scored 230 runs and in his second year he collected 412 runs with a century and he was in the Provincial Team as Deputy Skipper.
His first year in the First Eleven was in 2021 and 2022 and scored 382 runs with a fifty and played for the Big Match and the one dayer versus their arch rivals St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa and played for the District team and in his second year he scored 208 runs with a fifty and in the last season he scored 722 runs with a century against St. Anne’s College Kurunegala and got four fifties and also played for the Big Match and the Limited Over Match and scored a fifty against Sebs. In the one day tournament he scored 182 runs with a century and so far in this season playing in three matches he has collected 212 runs with two fifities and in addition he was in the under 23 squad of Panadura Sports Club.
