Super Round kicks off with heavyweights in action

Kandy Sports Club, last year’s runners-up and the only unbeaten team this season, will take on Air Force Sports Club in the opening match of the Super Round in the Mastercard ‘A’ Division Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament. The game will kick off at 4:15 PM on Saturday, March 1, at the Air Force Grounds in Ratmalana.

Defending champions CR & FC, who have slipped to third place, will clash with their fierce rivals, Havelock Sports Club, in a high-stakes encounter for the Eustace Matthysz Trophy at Longden Place on Sunday. Havelocks, currently ranked second, will aim to maintain their momentum after their stunning first-round victory over CR & FC.

Kandy SC dominated Air Force SC in their first-round encounter, securing a convincing 43-15 win at Nittawela just two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Havelocks pulled off a thrilling 53-42 upset over CR & FC, handing them their first defeat of the season.

With home advantage in their remaining two Super Round matches against Havelocks and CR & FC, Kandy SC are in prime position to reclaim the title. Their fortress at Nittawela will play a key role in their bid to regain the championship they lost to CR & FC last year.

As the Cup Segment begins on March 1, the points table remains unchanged except for Police SC overtaking Army SC for sixth place after the latter had a bye week.

CH & FC remain in the lead in the Plate competition, but Army SC and Police SC are still in contention to challenge them for the title. At the bottom, Sri Lions SC and Navy SC are locked in a tight battle, likely fighting for the final spot in the Clifford Cup’s top eight.
