Sri Lanka to restart key digital education initiative

The Cabinet has approved the recommencement of a project aimed at strengthening information technology education in schools and promoting the use of digital learning across the education sector.

The initiative, titled the Secondary Education Information Technology Centres Project, was originally approved at a Cabinet meeting on 5 June 2018.

It is funded through a loan from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund of the Export-Import Bank of Korea, along with contributions from the Sri Lankan Government.

Under the project, plans have been made to establish a national-level e-learning centre, as well as two provincial IT centres in the Southern Province Sri Lanka and Eastern Province Sri Lanka.

The broader objective is to introduce a structured e-learning system covering general, higher, and vocational education.

Although agreements related to the project were signed in November 2019, it has not progressed as initially planned. Following a comprehensive review by an expert committee, recommendations were made to revive and implement the project effectively.

Based on these recommendations, a proposal submitted by the Prime Minister in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has now been approved by the Cabinet, paving the way for the project’s restart.
