Sri Lanka Seeks Investors for Value-Added Graphite Project at Kahatagaha Mine

Sri Lanka is inviting investors to participate in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to develop a value-added graphite project at the Kahatagaha mine, the country’s largest and deepest graphite deposit.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development to launch the project after repealing a previous restructuring decision taken in December 2023.

The project will encompass reserve exploration, mining, processing, and value addition to graphite, ensuring greater economic returns for the country. The government noted that local technology is currently insufficient to properly estimate the mine’s reserves, highlighting the need for private sector expertise and investment.

While the project will be implemented with private sector participation, ownership of the graphite will remain with Kahatagaha Graphite Lanka Limited, and the jobs of current employees will be protected.

The 102-acre Kahatagaha mine, operated by the state-owned company, is internationally recognized for producing premium-quality graphite.
